I had always dreamed of going to Paris, and two summers ago, that dream came true. I envisioned savoring delicious food, tasting exquisite wine, and marveling at world landmarks. What I didn’t anticipate was how a few French words at the Champs Élysées metro stop would alter the course of my life.
As we arrived at our stop and walked toward the exit, I noticed a mother and her son approaching us. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the boy had a debilitating limp that made walking a challenge. “You are not alone,” I thought, recognizing the struggle all too well. I greeted them with a smile and a “Bonjour.” The mother responded, “Bonjour.” The boy looked up but quickly shyly looked away. As we passed, I overheard the mother saying in French, “Did you see that man? He has a disability just like you, and he looked so confident and happy.”
At first, I didn’t think much of it, but then the impact of her words hit me deeply. For most of my life, I had felt like I was battling the world—a David versus the preconceptions of society. Driven by an insatiable desire to prove my capabilities and feeling isolated by the lack of visible role models with disabilities, I realized something profound: I was the role model I had always needed.
I often recall that exchange with the mother and her son. I remember her smile, her son's timidity, and his uncertainty. I was that boy twenty years ago. Through my experiences, I’ve learned to trust in myself and my vision—a vision to defy and shatter societal preconceptions of disability. Now, I am clear about my purpose:
My purpose is to share my successes and struggles, to motivate you to relentlessly pursue your dreams, and to inspire those who’ve been told they can’t be great.
Together, we will embrace the limitless potential within each of us.
